According to an old LARP legend, many years ago a man decided to take an ordinary arrow and simply cover its tip with foam. At first glance it looked safe enough, and no one questioned it. During one battle he fired the arrow and struck a knight directly in the chest. The arrow became lodged between the plates of the knight’s armor, and at first the knight was impressed by how accurate the shot had been.
But when he finally pulled the arrow free, he discovered blood on the tip.
Another version of the story is less dramatic. In that telling, someone merely witnessed one of these arrows striking a tree with enough force to reveal what was hidden beneath the foam, and the archer was immediately removed from the event. Whether the darker version is true or the story simply grew with retelling over the years, the legend spread quickly through the community.
And ever since then, at many larger LARP events in the Czech Republic, arrows have been checked with metal detectors before players are allowed onto the field.
